Supermarkets and food stalls giving seeds more than makes up for the changes IMO and creates a more immersive experience. An update to this topic. Enough that on day 8 I could probably afford starting a farm without the perks because I have so many. I do however have more than enough seeds ready for when I do start a farm. But that's because I haven't invested in farming yet, the low return isn't worth it until I get the perks. Now it feels better, I'm struggling at times to get enough food. The farming perks weren't even relevant, I at least never saw a reason to get them when I could sustain a food supply without them. But what we had before felt cheap and like I was just gaming the apocalypse. Sure RNG for crop harvest leaving a seed is a little annoying compared to what we had. An apocalypse shouldn't have easy access to food unless you have farming knowledge, and even then it should be hard work and a small time sink. instead they decide to force the players to invest in it instead of letting the players playing the game their way. They could've nerfed in some other ways, like increasing the time i takes to grow and make it so that you need to invest in LOTL to decrease that time. Having to replant all that is just tedious and boring plus the fact that you have to do the math for 9 different crops as each has random drop when all i want after a long day is just go loot instead of sitting their recrafting seeds and harvesting them. pumpkin (for pumpkin cake for barter bonus) super corn (really good for even selling after the buffs) The core problem of farming simply hasn't been addressed with the old system, nor the new.įarming is the only thing that gives you negative results if you didn't invest in LOTL perk, mining or chopping wood perks gives you extra bonus but you still can get resources if you didn't invest in them, but now LOTL is a must if you wanna have a stable farm.Īdd to that that if you want to make farm work early you have to make bigger farms and you have to actually replant all of them, you need many different crops to get you going like The new system does the same thing, but adds more frustration via RNG causing a little more tedium and time to ramp up your farm to obscene sizes. Old farming was boring and trivialized the "survival" aspect of the game. These changes would take a little more effort than adding an arbitrary RNG, though not that much more effort as they're fairly easy to implement. These are more immersive, engaging (which could be considered fun), and realistic systems to implement. Also, adding a rudimentary disease system beyond just zombie infection that works on plants and animals would further reduce the power of farming (and if the player got sick, would require a greater strain on food supplies). That would require you to farm animals in one form or another, which is something many people want more of because they like livestock. If, instead of relying on RNG, they had added a system which necessitated management of specific nutrients, for instance protein, then farming would become far less powerful, as protein is one of the most difficult and rare things to obtain from crops, and something vegans struggle with. The primary issue is game balance and keeping the barest criteria to qualify 7d2d as a survival game (hunger and thirst). The only time you should ever implement it is when doing so isn't as terrible as the alternative of not having a mechanic or it being non-performant.įarming in 7d2d currently requires 8 points, and though most people can spend those points despite it stalling other progression, it isn't fun (though I've never found farming fun having grown up doing it), immersive (RNG is never immersive), or realistic (one ear of corn produces hundreds of seeds). Though the math works out to be fair, the reality is that RNG is a terrible mechanic to implement.
